PLANT: Erect stem up to 1 metre high and 5-10mm in diameter.

LEAVES: No leaves, only scale leaves widely spaced up the stem.

FLOWERS: Up to 40 flowers per stem. Each 1.5cm in length. Outer dark greenish-brown to almost black in colour, with raised knobs of a lighter colour. Inner flower white. Labellum 1cm long, white with a black tip. Underside of the labellum has 2 raised ridges that meet at the tip, unlike G "longcolumn", G cunninghamii, & G sesamoides in which the ridges form a wish-bone shape. Column visible, similar in length to the labellum.

FLOWERING TIME: December - January.

HABITAT: Forests and scrub. Often in dark shady places.

CONSERVATION STATUS: Records are few, so possibly endangered.

NOTES: The signs point to this being a distinct taxon, closely related to Gastrodia "longcolumn".
