PLANT: Terrestrial tuberous herb.
Up to 60cm high when in flower. Robust. Stem often tinged with purple.

LEAVES: Single leaf. Erect, fleshy and keeled. Undersides often ribbed. Tinged with purple, and often spotted with rust.

FLOWERS: Up to 12 flowers.
1.5 - 2cm across. Dark blue, mauve or magenta in colour. Column pale blue, top deeply split. Top of column yellow. Column arms with short tufts of white or mauve cilia. Opens only 2 or 3 flowers at a time.

FLOWERING TIME: November - January.

HABITAT: Open areas amongst scrub, gumland, clay banks, open grassland. Lowland to low montane.

CONSERVATION STATUS: Not Threatened. Common, but local.

NOTES: A form with an orange tipped column is Thelymitra "orange-top".
