Plant

To 5cm tall. Leaves 10mm wide, variable from kidney shape to orbicular-cordate and mucronate.

Flowers

Usually below leaf, sometimes above. Dorsal sepal ovoid much narrower than he labellum top, streaked red with a small point jutting out beyond the labellum. Labellum dark crimson, streaked green The labellum midlobe oval, elongate with a green or cream opening .

Flowering

June - October.

Habitat

Dry areas under beech and other light canopy. Waikato southwards.

Conservation

Can form large colonies but at risk - naturally uncommon.

Notes

DNA analysis shows it is close to C. hypogaeus. Voucher specimen (CHR537604; Remutaka)

Key features

A very elongate narrow labellum midlobe with red wings and a dorsal sepal that is often somewhat narrow and peaked and sits loosely on the labellum top.
